Piles
Haemorrhoids also known as Piles are a group of clumps, or cushions of tissue in the anal canal. They are filled with blood vessels, support tissue, muscles, and elastic fibbers and are classified into two categories: internal and external.
Internal hemorrhoids are so far inside the rectum that you cannot see or feel them. They usually don't hurt because there are few pain-sensing nerves in the rectum. Bleeding is the only sign of internal haemorrhoids.
External haemorrhoids occur within the anus and are often uncomfortable. If an external haemorrhoid protrudes outward (usually during the passage of stool), you can see and feel it.
Cause
Plagues can develop due to chronic constipation, which leads to excessive tension those results in swollen veins in the rectal area. Due to the increased pressure on the veins in the pelvic region, pregnant women can also
Diagnosis
Physical examination and proctoscopy may be helpful in diagnosing piles. If a large lesion or other pathology in the colon is suspected, a colonoscopy is sometimes advised.
Treatment
Sometimes, Haemorrhoids get better on their own without the need for any treatment. Treatments can help reduce the discomfort and itching experienced by many patients.
The treatment options available are as follows:
- Based on the diagnosis, the surgeon ascertains whether home treatment is needed or further intervention is needed. Symptomatic relief is provided by lifestyle and dietary changes such as regular physical exercise, fluids, and a high fibber diet.
- Surgery is specifically used for large haemorrhoids. Generally, it is beneficial to use surgery when conservative treatment/management is not effective. Sometimes, it is done on an outpatient basis i.e. the patient goes home after the procedure.
Types of Surgery available for Piles treatment
- Injection Sclerotherapy- The pile masses are injected with a sclerosing agent which causes them to shrink. This method is successful in early cases of piles.
- Banding- This involves placing a band like noose at the root of the pile mass which gradually falls off as its blood supply gets cut off.
- Infrared Coagulation– This procedure only works in the early cases of plies. The base of the haemorrhoid is burnt with a very short exposure to infrared rays with the help of a probe.
- MIPH for piles (Minimally Invasive Procedure For Haemorrhoids) - This procedure is performed using a special circular stapler. It is relatively painless and can be done as a daycares surgery.
