What is Ovarian Cystectomy?
Ovarian Cystectomy is the removal of a fluid-filled sac in the ovary. Cystectomy on the ovaries is very common. Most ovarian Cystectomies are benign (non-cancerous), but some are cancerous or may become cancerous over time. Ovarian Cystectomy can vary in size – from as small as the size of a pea to the size of a large melon (sometimes even larger). Cystectomy can be physical or pathological.
Types of Ovarian Cystectomy
There are different types of ovarian Cystectomy, such as dermoid Cystectomy and Endometrioma Cystectomy. However, functional Cystectomies are the most common type.
The two types of functional Cystectomy include Follicle and Corpus Luteum Cystectomy.
Follicle Cystectomy
During a woman's menstrual cycle, an egg grows in a sac called a follicle. This sac is located inside the ovary. In most cases, this follicle or sac opens and releases an egg. But if the follicle does not rupture, the fluid inside the follicle can form a Cystectomy on the ovary.

Corpus Luteum Cystectomy
Follicle sacs typically dissolve after releasing an egg. But if the sac doesn’t dissolve and the opening of the follicle seals, additional fluid can develop inside the sac, and this accumulation of fluid causes a corpus luteum Cystectomy.

What are the Major Symptoms of Ovarian Cystectomy?
In most cases, ovarian Cystectomy shows no signs of discomfort. But symptoms may appear if the Cystectomy begins to grow. Visit below
- Abdominal bloating or swelling
- Painful bowel movements
- Painful intercourse
- Pain in the lower back or thighs
- Breast tenderness
- Nausea and vomiting
What is Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy?
Laparoscopic Cystectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to identify and remove Cystectomy or masses from one or both ovaries. When a Cystectomy needs to be examined more closely or when a patient experiences symptoms as a result of a Cystectomy, a doctor may recommend a laparoscopic Cystectomy.
Laparoscopy is usually performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon will inflate the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas to move the abdominal wall away from the organs to make the organs more visible. Once the abdomen is inflated, the laparoscope is inserted through small incisions made near the navel. Two to three additional incisions are made on either side of the pubic bone and/or lower abdomen. The length of the incision varies but most incisions are between one-quarter of an inch and three-quarters of an inch in length.

A camera on the end of the laparoscope broadcasts a live video feed to a screen for the surgeon to perform the procedure. The doctor will examine the Cystectomy and ovary more closely and remove the Cystectomy using surgical instruments passed through incisions. During a Cystectomy, the surgeon works carefully so as not to damage the ovaries or fallopian tubes (the tubes that connect the ovaries to the uterus) and to preserve the patient's fertility.
